Sweet Potato Base Pizza -
Ingredients For Sweet Potato Base Pizza
- 1 Medium Sweet Potato
- 1 Large Carrot
- Half a Cup of Rice Flour
- Half Table Spoon of Italian Herb Seasoning
- Salt & Pepper
- Toppings of your choice
Personal size pizza (6 inch)

There aren't many things I love on a Friday night more than a delicious pizza. But when you're trying to cut back the carbs and keep your diet under control I found myself with a catch twenty-two. After experimenting with a few recipes, and making many a mistake. I've found method that not only works. But is incredibly delicious whilst being kind to the old love handles that conventional pizzas seem to love to
cling to...... And its gluten free!!!
I have made this recipe using both a conventional oven and a pizza oven (guess which one i prefer!) but don't worry there isn't much difference. Its just using a pizza oven is just that little bit more alfresco.
- Start off by pre-heating the oven. For a conventional oven you're going to need it at about 220 degrees. If your one of the lucky few with a pizza oven then make sure you have your oven at around 320 degrees with flame.
- Next step fill a large pan with water and bring it to the boil. Whether or not you peel the sweet potatoes is completely up to you. I like the earthy taste the skin adds so tend to keep it.Cut the potatoes and carrots into smallish chunks and keep them on a low simmer for around 20 minutes, to make sure they are properly cooked pierce them with a sharp knife they should sink in easy with no resistance.
- Once cooked drain your sweet potatoes and carrots off then mash it all up, This may take a while to get the lumps out but believe me it is worth the effort. Add in the rice flour and continue mashing!
- Now add your Italian seasoning to the mix and any salt and pepper to taste.You should be left with a beautiful looking orange dough.
- Roll your dough out, making a nice circle. Try to keep the base as uniformed as possible when rolling it so the base cooks evenly. After giving a suitable sized baking tray a little brushing of rapeseed oil or sprinkle of rice flour, pop the base on to it.
- The base will now need to be pre cooked before you add any toppings. If you're using a conventional oven around 10-15 minutes will be fine. For the pizza oven as little as 5-10 is perfect.
- Whilst the pizza is a cooking start prepping your toppings. For meat or fisg toppings you will need to cook these before hand but everything else will be fine to add during the next stage stage.
- Once your base has precooked take the base out of the oven and turn it upside down( Please don't flip it like a pancake as this may crack or break the base!) Add your toppings to what once was the underside of the base. Then pop it back in the oven for another five minutes or so, you will know when the pizza is done when the edges start to brown. You may want rotate the pizza whilst in the oven for the second time so it cooks evenly.
